Les Chatons de Billinghay

As is usual on these visits, our friends from Ballon did not arrive on time! They arrived early much to the consternation of the refreshments team! After the usual introductions, new families became acquainted and our visitors had time for a short rest after their long journey. In the evening there was a Champagne reception attended by the “Twinners” and special guests invited to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the twinning. These included the local MP (who recounted the experience on his website), County/District/Parish Councillors and heads of local and County organisations. An excellent evening was had by all with the essential speeches being kept brief but relevant. Entertainment was provided by Les Chatons de Billinghay displaying exceptional talent and grasp of the French language (Tina bribed me to say that!!)

Sunday, 30th October

There was a Church Service in the morning followed by coffee and biscuits in the Community Rooms. This was followed in the afternoon with a Hog Roast held in and around the Village Hall.

                                  Hog Roast Preparation

An excellent hog roast with Lincolnshire Sausages and Chicken Drumsticks had been prepared by Stuart Haw and his team and was enjoyed by everyone. 200 people were catered for with a large number of villagers attending. Let’s hope that one or two of them join the twinning. Music was provided by Haydn Clark and his daughter, Megan with support from a trio of his friends from Horncastle. This was extremely enjoyable and the French visitors relished the chance to show off their dancing skills. Our resident version of Len Goodman (John Twells) was also seen cutting a mean figure on the dance floor. The French families then spent the rest of the day with their Hosts although it is believed that several local Bars/Restaurants enjoyed their custom that evening.

Monday, 31st October

There was an early start on Monday as two coaches went to York. Whilst the National Railway Museum was used as a base, the twinners split into small groups and enjoyed, inter alia:

  • The Exhibition at the Railway Museum
  • York Minster
  • The Jorvik Centre
  • The City Tours
  • The Whisky Shop
  • Various other attractions.

It was a successful if somewhat tiring day and most people were glad that there were no organised sessions in the evening and they could spend time with their families.
